Clinical Informatics Fellowship Program

Clinical Informatics is the application of informatics and information technology to deliver healthcare services. It is a new medical subspecialty, which focuses on (1) medical data, (2) clinical processes, and (3) computational systems applied to the practice of medicine. It was approved by American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) in 2011, with the first board-certification exams given in 2013.

Clinical Informatics is an interdisciplinary specialty, which draws on elements from clinical medicine, the healthcare system, and information technology. And while there is some overlap, Clinical Informatics is not simply "medical computer programming", "doctors using computers", "epidemiology",  "genomics" or "hospital IT". Instead, as stated above, Clinical Informatics is the "practice of medicine" using medical data, clinical processes, and computational systems.

Physicians who specialize in Clinical Informatics assess the information needs of providers and patients, analyze clinical processes, and implement clinical information systems. They provide leadership and expertise in the procurement, customization, development, implementation, management, evaluation, and continuous improvement of clinical information systems. They work with a large range of computational systems, including electronic health record systems, decision-support systems, practice management tools, imaging systems, clinical research systems, public health systems, and genomic systems. They find employment as Chief Medical Information Officers (CMIOs), researchers, educators, and in industry, all of which are in high demand, and with 60% of CMIOs earning more than $200,000 annually.
