Clinical Informatics and Health IT at the University of Maryland
Mission - The University of Maryland Clinical Informatics Group (www.umcig.com) is concerned with the optimal use of information and technology to improve individual health, deliver safer and more efficient patient care, and enhance access to biomedical knowledge. It is led by an interdisciplinary team of physicians and informaticians dedicated to research, education, consulting, and mentoring on the application of information technology to the practice of medicine. The mission of the group is to focus on computational systems that expand the scope of clinical medicine, have a strong theoretical basis in computer science, are of strategic importance to the University of Maryland Medical Center, and encourage greater collaboration between the School of Medicine and other University of Maryland Institutions.
Objectives
Research - Innovative applications of Clincial Informatics and Health IT that expand the scope of clinical medicine, have a strong theoretical basis in computer science, and are of strategic importance to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Key areas of research include personalized medicine, clinical data and image mining, clinical decision support systems, electronic health record systems, and emergency preparedness.
Education - Interdisciplinary training in Clinical Informatics for people in the computational sciences and the life sciences. In addition, the Group is developing a fellowship program in Clinical Informatics, which is the newest ABMS medical subspecialty.
Consulting - Consultation services on topics related to data privacy & security, clinical data access and management, decision support systems, electronic health record systems, meaninful use, and general informatics issues are availble to the University of Maryland and other entities.
Mentoring - Mentoring opportunities for computational science graduate students, life science graduate students, medical students, residents, and fellows at UMB, UMBC, and other University of Maryland campuses.
Principal Faculty - The Clinical Informatics Group is comprised of an inter-disciplinary and multi-department team of clinicians and investigators, with the principal members holding faculty appointments from the Departments of Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Diagnostic Radiology, Computer Science & Electrical Engineering, and Information Systems at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the University of Maryland Baltimore County. The principal members have authored more than 1,00 refereed publications, and have a strong history of grant funding from NIH, NSF, NIST, DHS, and DoD.
